Mama Speaks #23

I hated this stuff as a kid. Now, it’s like a warm blanket over my body.

Mrs. FWL is sooooo right. I don’t care what flavor cold medicine it was (in this case cherry), I agree that it was all gross. Taking cold medicine as a kid was like torture, despite the benefits it may or may not have had on my body. It only took 30 years to truly appreciate the wonderful effects of that red, coat-your-throat, alcoholy goodness.

Any adult can attest to the fact that sleep is one of, if not the, most important part of our day. Working, eating, and exercising are all important, but sleeping is truly amazing. Give me 7-10 and I can take on the world.

But I think sleep takes on another meaning when you become a parent. Not necessarily because you have to take care of another human, but because the opportunities to recuperate dwindle significantly. We are lucky to sleep until 7am on a Saturday before “Mama, Papa” can be heard down the hall on repeat and naps are just as difficult when the kid’s nap time is your “me” time to eat or breathe.

Which is why anything approved by the FDA that will keep my nose from running like a faucet, my lungs from exploding, and my mind from spiraling out of control, is consumed site unseen (Expiration date? Who cares!). It’s weird, I almost don’t even taste the medicine anymore – either because my taste buds are so traumatized that they have blocked the pathways to my brain or because I am immediately put at ease knowing that I’ve just ingested something that will hopefully knock me out sooner than later.

Sleep well, and may you not be attacked by the day care drips like we have.
