4 iPhone Apps We Use

In the tangled jungle of available apps, there are a few goods ones and plenty of crappy ones. And I know that once my child comprehends more than sleeping, pooping, and eating, our app universe will vastly expand into ABCs, 123s, and Elmo. But for now, we have to remain sane, so here are four apps we use to do that.

Babycenter My Pregnancy (Free) – This app is designed to be used during pregnancy. Essentially it is a tracker that informs you day-by-day about the development of your baby. For someone like myself who was very ignorant about pregnancy, the developmental process, and what is really going on inside, it was nice to feel like I had some clue of what was happening.

Relax Melodies (Free) – We use this app for one reason, and one reason only – white noise. Babies love white noise as it reminds them of the womb. We also have one of those white noise machines, and that’s fine most of the time. Think of this as a shot of white noise, it gives her that extra jolt when she is being too fussy, or just needs extra “encouragement”. Turn this on and hopefully your baby responds like ours (at least most of the time) and relaxes a little. And when it doesn’t work, just pray.

Total Baby ($4.99) – This app is useful right now to track her sleep, length of feeding, and diapers. I know we will not use this app forever, but during these early weeks and months, keeping track of these activities is rather fascinating and helpful to start seeing patterns. Chances are your pediatrician will ask you some seemingly simple questions during the first visits – ie. How long is baby feeding? How often/long is she sleeping? How many diapers a day? etc. With so much other stuff occupying your brain waves, not having to mentally keep track of these activities is nice. And while the price is a little steep for an app, the free versions are just clunky and harder to use. I was willing to pay $4.99 for my wife’s sanity.

Pandora (free) – My guess is you already have this app. I only mention it for one reason, the “Deuter” station. Our friends have sworn by this station for years, so now we use it it too. It is your typical soothing music, nature sounds, flutes, etc. Nothing fancy, but calming nonetheless when the previously mentioned white noise drives you nuts.

Any other apps I should know about?
